1880 HISTORY OF LIVINGSTON COUNTY MICHIGAN TOWNSHIP OF HARTLAND Part A. Page 363-364 Mr. Bullard well remembers the first log school-house, which was built in 1836, and which he assisted in erecting. The earliest instructor was Miss Sarah Huntley, who followed the custom of teachers of the day and "boarded 'round."
Brighton Township, Livingston County This History was written in 1880. Author Unknown The first residents of the township early turned their attention to the means of education for their children, and erected, in, 1834, on government land, on section 11, a small log school-house, in which the little ones of the neighborhood were congregated under the supervision of Miss Sarah Huntley, of Hartland. The teacher enjoyed in turn the hospitality of all her patrons, and was certainly the earliest instructor in the township, as the building in which she taught was unquestionably the first school-house in the township
Sarah married Sandford L. Murray, son of John C. Murray and Bersheba ?, in 1842. (Sandford L. Murray was born about 1814, died on 27 Apr 1859 and was buried in West Highland Cem, Highland Twp, Oakland Co, Michigan.)
