(NOTE: Sarah, wife of John TINKER , had been m. to William BARNES. See notes below. This Mary was not their daughter Mary, an d BARNES may have been a married name, if source 4 is correct.) (5) Marie BARONS or Mary BARN ES was not d/o John BARNES or William BARNES of Gloucester, MA. d/o John HAND/Alice GRANSDE N of Long Island. Marriage to Charles BARNES: (4a,5) John and Mary HUNTLEY were convicted of fornication "whi le she was still married to her former husband." (5) Divorce from Charles BARNES: (5) May 1669, New London, CT. He had deserted his wife and chi ldren and returned to England. Marriage to John HUNTLEY: (4) 2 Jun 1669. (4,5) New London, CT. (5) 1 Jun 1669, by Thomas M INER of Stonington, CT. Death: (5) Before 5 Jul 1687, when Elizabeth (HUNTLEY) LEWIS gave receipt for her share o f her father's estate.
(2,4) 1647, 19 Oct (8th mo.): Sarah BARNES of Boston, wife of William BARNES of Gloucester , applied for divorce and maintenance for herself and her children. Sarah (the same?) m. Joh n TINKER, & d. 1648. One of the 2 daughters Richard COOKE took to bring up; the other remaine d with John TINKER. (1a) Sarah WELTSHIRE (her mother) divorced William BARNES (her father) an d married 2nd John TINKER (acting Governor of CT 1659), who adopted her daughter Mary. (3) Af ter the death of her mother Sarah, Mary BARNES was brought up by John TINKER's second wife Al ice SMITH, who afterwards m. William MEASURER and came to live on the farm next to John HUNTL EY, Lyme, CT. (4a,b) Holman claimed that John TINKER brought his BARNES stepdaughter with hi m to New London and identified her as the Mary BARNES who married there 2 Jun 1669 John HUNTL EY of Lyme. However, Jacobus showed that the HUNTLEY couple were subsequently convicted of fo rnication "while she was still married to her former husband" and that she was thus not TINKE R's stepdaughter.
