Copy of letter from Rosa (Clinton) Ogren, daughter of Catherine (Tobey) Clinton. Transcribed by Marva (Tripp) Hothan a 2nd great granddaughter of Deborah W. Tobey -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A letter sent to Maud (Miller) Buckingham, a great granddaughter of Deborah W. Tobey. From Mrs Albert Ogren - (Rosa Clinton), dated Nov. 1, 1920. My fathers name was Eli Clinton b. Coldbrook, Conn, Litchfield Co., buried Hobart, Lake Co., Indiana. Also mother 2nd wife buried there - yes he was m.twice. 1st-Deborah Toby - Ch-Ezra d.21. Lucy your grandmother - Lucinda = Mary - Henry d. 2 yrs. 2nd wife Catherine Toby, youngest daughter - ch - Frank - Stephen - myself (Rose) & George d.-young. Toby's were born in New York but the bible I have does not give town. Father was one of a family of 13 - the youngest one. I can remember of his speaking of only Lyman Clinton - Rhoda - Henry - Mehitable. The older ch. had moved away in early life so we rather lost track of them. (OP. Clinton Waukasha, Wis. had outline of family - is dead - his daughter Abbie & Mable has history) I can't remember who this o.p. Clinton's father was but one of fathers brothers. My father (should be grandfather) was to young to enlist in Revolutionary war - altho he trained as a drummer boy but was too young to go in when the call came for enlistment. Father's oldest brothers must have been in somewhere. Well, now, the Samuel Wing was my grandmother Toby's brother. There were Samuel - Elizabeth & Jerome that I remember. Elizabeth m.Zacheus Toby. Jerome had 2 boys Charley & Jerome Jr. That Grandma Toby was my gradmother & your grandmother Lucy's grandmother & when she began to be sickly & failed in health grandpa Toby took her to Illinois to live with her brother Samuel Wing & your Grandma Lucy & family also lived there with "Uncle Samuel Wing". The Wings came over as early settlers soon after the Mayflower. Royal Clinton (who wanted to adopt Lucy Clinton) was Lyman Clintons son & fathers nephew. Lyman C. had several ch - 11 I think - & they always lived in N.Y. state. Lyman Clintons people were quite poor but his sons, especially Royal, made good in every deal until he was well off - but not very wealthy until his boys went in with him in the lumber mill work etc - business. Then all of them gained in wealth still more - tell the boys had a deep interest. Royal visited father quite often - the last time during World's Fair with 2nd wife. I have 3 girls - one in Michigan & one in Akron, Ohio- and Ana at home. Also a stepson married. Father died Aug 1 1892,- mother (Catherine) Sept 7 1897. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second Letter from Rose (Clinton) Ogren - Jan 22, 1921 "I see too that your mother like myself & my 2nd daughter all had twins like my grandmother Eliz Toby. Ours were all boys. your gr grandmother! Isn't it wonderful how such things seem to run in our families. You gr-grandmother Deborah was oldest - then twins Zoath & Stephen - Benjamin - Philena & Catherine. I know they must have been good christians for the ch were all named Bible names. "Grandma Toby" (Eliz Wing) was a Quaker before her m. to Zacheus Toby, he being a Baptist. Grandma joined some later. It always makes me proud of our grandparents when I look in their bible here, & see their own handwriting in dif. places. Zoath & Stephen lived to be young men but the rest of our twin babies never lived any length of time. It was my father (Eli) that trained for drummer boy & was too young or delicate health for active service. Father b. June 25, 1811 d. Aug 1 1892 (81 yrs old) Deborah Toby Clinton b. Jan 12, 1818 & died Oct 7 1856 (ORC's record said Sept 1 1846) Catherine b. July 23 1828 - d. Sept 7, 1897. Mother & Aunt Deborah were Baptists but father never belonged to any church & died without becoming a Christian.
