Early Marriages of Newaygo County

The first recorded marriage in Newaygo County was filed April 10, 1852, but occurred Oct.2, 1851. The certificate reads as follows: “This is to certify that John Beck and Phiarm Luther both of the county of Newaygo, were married by me, a minister of the M. E. Church, on the 2nd. day of October, 1851, in the presence of James P. Berry and Sarah Berry.” “David Culp”

The second marriage occurred Dec. 4, 1851 and was performed for William H. Tubbs and Laura M. Bonney. Dec. 15, 1851, David M. Cooley and Abyssinia Miller were joined in matrimony. These three first marriages were performed by Rev. David Culp, of the Methodist Episcopal denomination.

In 1852, four couples were married; March 18, Cornelius Slaght, Jr. and Nancy Ann Lace, by Rev. David Culp; April 13, Fenton Taylor and Julia Swain, by William Barton, Justice of the Peace; and Sept. 30, Leonard Hetter and Rebecca Gauweiler, by Jacob Barnhart, Justice of the Peace; Jacob H. Terwillegar and Mary Jane Eaves on the 12th. of December.

1834 Methodist Episcopal Church merged with the British Wesleyan Church into Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada.
1835 One of five who organized the new independent Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada.
1874 Methodist Church of Canada was formed from the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Canada and the Wesleyan Methodist Conference of Eastern British America.
1884 Methodist Church of Canada joined with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Canada, together with the Bible Christian Church of Canada and the Primitive Methodist Church in Canada, bringing to birth the Methodist Church (Canada, Newfoundland and Bermuda.)
1925 The Methodist Church united with 70% of the Presbyterian Church in Canada and 96% of the Congregational Union of Canada to form The United Church of Canada.


NOTE: Mr. Culp was one of the noted Five who in 1834 met at Cummer's meeting-house, Yonge Street and organized the present Methodist Episcopal Church of Canada. He died June 16th, 1871, aged 87 years.

David married Margaret House, daughter of ??? Phillip House and ??? Mary, on 18 Sep 1804 in Grimsby, Lincoln Co, Ontario.¹ (Margaret House was born on 21 May 1788 in Lincoln Co, Ontario, died on 13 Oct 1856 in Croton Twp, Newaygo Co, Michigan and was buried in Culp Cemetery, Croton Twp, Newaygo Co, Michigan.)

David also married Elizabeth Ann (Anderson) Elliot on 10 Mar 1857.
